In 1980, Stephan Weidner, Kevin Russell and Peter Schorowsky founded the Böhsen Onkelz near Aschaffenburg. The teenagers owed their name to neighbourhood children who called them the evil uncles because of their dyed green hair. After a few smaller gigs, the band was expanded in 1981 to include guitarist Matthias 'Gonzo' Röhr. With their authentic appearance and questionable lyrics, the Onkelz quickly built up a reputation. While the band had initially been part of the local punk scene, the shift to skinhead and oi culture soon followed. The debut album "Der nette Mann" (The Nice Man),released in 1984, was put on the index because of its lyrics. The incident did not harm the Böhsen Onkelz at all, however, but brought the band additional notoriety. With their third album "Onkelz wie wir" (Onkelz like us) from 1987, the Böhsen Onkelz proved that they wanted to break away from their skinhead past again quite quickly. In the follow-up albums, the band not only distanced themselves from the right-wing scene on a lyrical level, but also adopted a different tone overall. Individual passages were still oriented towards punk elements, but the songs were increasingly characterised by hard rock and heavy metal. Catchy tracks like "Nur die besten sterben jung", "Nichts ist für die Ewigkeit" and "Wir ham noch lange nicht genug" have made the Böhsen Onkelz one of the most popular bands in the German-language music scene - despite the fact that the musicians were never able to completely shake off their initial reputation. Since the 1998 release of "Viva los Tioz", every studio album has reached number one in the German charts.
The Onkelz regularly play sold-out arenas and also thrill hundreds of thousands of fans at festivals like the Wacken Open Air. In 2020, the 17th Böhsen Onkelz record with the same title was released, which not only reached the top position again in Germany, but also in Austria and Switzerland.
