Eric Clapton is undisputedly one of the most important blues and rock guitarists in the world and was even voted the best guitarist in the world in 1990. The musician has had a decisive influence on the development of blues rock since the 1960s. With more than 280 million records sold worldwide, Clapton, who was born in Ripley in 1945, is one of the most successful artists of all time. As the proud owner of 17 Grammy Awards and various major honours, Eric Clapton is also the only three-time member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - with the bands Yardbirds and Cream and as a solo artist. The 76-year-old exceptional talent's most famous songs include the cover version of Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff", "Knocking On Heaven's Door", "Tears In Heaven", "Circus" and "Runaway Train". The most successful album in Clapton's long discography is "461 Ocean Boulevard", released in 1974.
Eric Clapton recorded his first solo album in 1970. At the same time, he founded the band Derek and the Dominos, with whom he recorded the hit song "Layla". During his time with the Yardbirds, the Briton was given the nickname "Slowhand" by manager Giorgio Golmelsky after Clapton broke a string at a concert and the audience began to clap slowly while the musician strung a new string. In addition to his band memberships, Clapton also worked as a songwriter and composer for film scores, among other things. He perfected his guitar playing on the side as a guest musician with many other bands and their album productions. Clapton's musical friendships at this time already included Beatle member George Harrison, Steve Winwood, Pete Townshend and Billy Preston.
In the late 1970s, the musician suffered from a deep addiction to drugs and alcohol, from which he escaped after several rehab programmes. In the 1980s, Clapton increasingly focussed on music again, producing two albums with Phil Collins, for example. At the beginning of the 1990s, the musician suffered two heavy blows of fate. Firstly, his friend, the musician Stevie Ray Vaughan, died in a helicopter crash after a concert together in 1991. Secondly, Clapton's son died tragically only a short time later when he fell out of a window from the 53rd floor of a tower block in New York. Eric Clapton processed his grief in the track "Tears In Heaven", which was later released in early 1992. It was not until 1996 that the musician returned to the stage and played with The Who and Bob Dylan in front of 150,000 fans in London's Hyde Park. In the 2000s, further collaborations with artist friends followed, including a song with B.B. King and concerts with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Ravi Shankar, Billy Preson, Gary Brooker and many more. Even in his younger years, the master of the guitar was always able to impress with his music. In Germany, his albums have reached the upper ranks of the charts.
Eric Clapton's career is impressive. Experiencing the musician live is both an incredible and unique experience. Even after more than 40 years on stage, Eric Clapton still impresses today with his extraordinary guitar playing.
