Eric Clapton is undisputedly one of the most important blues and rock guitarists in the world and was even named the best guitarist in the world in 1990. The musician has had a significant influence on the development of blues rock since the 1960s. With more than 280 million records sold worldwide, Clapton, born in Ripley in 1945, is one of the most successful artists of all time. The proud owner of 17 Grammy Awards and various other prestigious accolades, Eric Clapton is also the only triple inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – with the bands Yardbirds and Cream, as well as a solo artist. Among the most famous songs by the 76-year-old exceptional talent are the cover version of Bob Marley's ‘I Shot The Sheriff’, ‘Knocking On Heaven's Door’, ‘Tears In Heaven’, “Circus” and ‘Runaway Train’. The most successful album in Clapton's long discography is ‘461 Ocean Boulevard’, released in 1974.
Eric Clapton recorded his first solo album in 1970. At the same time, he founded the band Derek and the Dominos, with whom he recorded the hit song ‘Layla’. The Briton earned his nickname ‘Slowhand’ during his time with the Yardbirds from manager Giorgio Golmelsky after Clapton broke a string during a concert and the audience began to clap slowly while the musician strung a new string. In addition to his band memberships, Clapton was also involved in songwriting and composing, including film music. He perfected his guitar playing more or less on the side as a guest musician with many other bands and their album productions. Clapton's musical friendships at that time already included Beatle member George Harrison, Steve Winwood, Pete Townshend and Billy Preston.
In the late 1970s, the musician was in the throes of a deep drug and alcohol addiction, which he escaped after several stints in rehab. In the 1980s, Clapton then concentrated increasingly on music again, producing two albums with Phil Collins, for example. In the early 1990s, the musician suffered two serious blows. First, his friend, musician Stevie Ray Vaughan, died in a helicopter crash in 1991 after a joint concert. Shortly afterwards, Clapton's son tragically lost his life when he fell from the window of a 53-storey high-rise building in New York. Eric Clapton processed his grief in the track ‘Tears In Heaven’, which was released in early 1992. It wasn't until 1996 that the musician returned to the stage, playing with The Who and Bob Dylan in front of 150,000 fans in London's Hyde Park. The 2000s saw further collaborations with fellow artists, including a song with B.B. King and concerts with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Ravi Shankar, Billy Preson, Gary Brooker and many others. Even in his later years, the master guitarist continued to impress with his music. In Germany, his albums have ranked high in the charts.
Eric Clapton's career is impressive. Seeing the musician live is an incredible and unique experience. Even after more than 40 years on stage, Eric Clapton still impresses with his extraordinary guitar playing.
